Beginning in the early eighties in Kingston Jamaica, this music developed from a response to the dominance of conscious reggae. First, it was defined by deejays toasting over dub reggae, soon evolving into a signature mix of synthesized sounds, rhythmic beats, and often raw lyrics. This sound underwent further shifts with the incorporation of digit
